Thousands of racing fans gathered over the weekend before Independence Day for two exciting days of extreme competitive rallycross races on Marine Corps Air Station New River July 2 and 3.
“Being here is a great experience; everybody’s super nice; the Marines love it out here.” said Conner Martell, Red Bull Global Rally Cross driver with DirtFish Rally School. “I made my debut last year here; this was my first race ever last year here and sitting on poll is super nice, I’m hoping I can bring home a win for the DirtFish team this year.”
Eleven racers took the dirt and asphalt track in GRC lite cars and supercars over the weekend demonstrating expert handling through the course’s many sharp turns and slick straightaways exciting the fans who filled the stands.
“It was really important for us to have this event here at MCAS New River,” said Colby Rodriguez, the chief strategy officer for Red Bull Global Rally Cross. “A lot of sports organizations do a great job at highlighting our military and the fact that we can bring our organization to the Marines on such an important weekend in U.S. history, I don’t think it can get much better than this.”
Scott Speed conquered the second-ever event on the air station, beating out Chip Ganassi Racing’s Brian Deegan in a comeback fashion, taking the lead across the finish line after gaining it on the final leg of the last lap Saturday.
The event came to a disappointing end as rain canceled the final supercar race Sunday.
“I think it’s amazing that the Marine Corps has allowed us to come here in such a unique location and host this event,” said Rodriguez. “When we started the process, it was very challenging to get through all the questions. But once they understood what we were bringing, they really embraced this entire moment and the fact that we can allow it to be free for everyone. It’s a true gift that we were allowed to give Marines on the 4th of July weekend.”
