Posted on December 4, 2015 by Laura Ginn

The 2016 Giant Slalom Men’s World Cup is now well underway. It took to the slopes at Sölden (Austria) back in October and after a break in November the action will be ramping up again over the next few weeks. Next up is Beaver Creek (US) on 6 December (check out the course profile and map) and then it is back to Europe the following weekend for Val d’Isere and Alta Badia before Christmas.

Ted Ligety (US) has made a storming start to the championship, winning in Austria. Ligety will be riding high at the moment and won’t be short of confidence heading back across the Atlantic. He has won at Beaver Creek in the past and must be feel good about doing well this time around.

After this weekend there will be another eight events in the World Cup over the next four months, mainly in Europe, together with Naeba in Japan in February, before the championship culminates in St. Moritz on 19 March.

Complete schedule of events:Oct 25 – Sölden, AustriaDec 6 – Beaver Creek, USADec 12 – Val d’Isere, FranceDec 20 – Alta Badia, ItalyJan 10 – Adelboden, SwitzerlandJan 31 – Garmisch, GermanyFeb 13 – Naeba, JapanFeb 28 – Hinterstoder, AustriaMar 5 – Kranjska Gora, SloveniaMar 19 – St. Moritz, SwitzerlandRankings:

After Day 1 Ted Ligety led the field with Frenchman Thomas Fanara in second place. Current champion, Marcel Hirscher of Austria trails in third place. Of course it is very early days and no-one is writing off his chances of retaining his crown just yet, remaining a huge favorite with the bookies. If Ligety puts in a strong performance at home this weekend he may build up the sort of momentum that carries him through to victory in the competition.
